The cat has no errands,
yet it stands,fierce and ornamental
in the corridor that forgets time.

Its belly blooms flowers
no one planted,
each petal curling with stories untold.

One eye watches ghosts,
the other guards shoes.
Not because it must,
but because no one else thinks to.

There’s a moon somewhere in its stripes
and the echo of stained glass sermons
rattles in its paws.
You walk past
pretending not to see
its whispered judgment.

The floorboards beneath it remember
lighter steps.
Mirth. A child’s plum-stained palms.
Someone humming.
Someone hiding.

The cat knows.
Always did.

And still,
it lets you through.
